Fort Walsh and The RCMP Musical Ride
On August 27, 2005 Fort Walsh National Historic Site of Canada will be hosting the RCMP Musical Ride on the original parade grounds where the very first mounted drills were practiced and perfected.

The RCMP Musical Ride provides Canadians, from coast to coast, with the opportunity to experience part of our heritage and national identity. The Musical Ride is based on historic mounted cavalry drills, which focused on formations of lines and columns and the smooth transition from one formation to the other. As headquarters of the North West Mounted Police between 1878 and 1882, all new recruits to the force received basic training at Fort Walsh in the Cypress Hills. This training included mounted drills that were later, once the NWMP formed its own band, accompanied by music. These drills evolved into the spectacle known around the world as the Musical Ride.

To help us celebrate this special event, we invite school-age children throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta to take part in the Fort Walsh 2005 Poster Challenge. We ask that you create a poster, which expresses the significance of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride and its deep roots in our Canadian identity (for more information on this year’s theme, poster topics and age categories, entry deadline and contact information, please call (306) 662-2645).

Winning entries from each category will receive a free admission voucher to Fort Walsh National Historic Site for their entire class! An invitation will also be extended to the individual winners to attend the Musical Ride event on August 27, 2005. At this time, they will be presented with a certificate and will be recognized for their achievement and creativity.
